what do you do when you lose contact with your client?

Part two of a twelve-part series on ACT processes


Our clients will often get hooked by their thoughts during the session, and when that happens, they lose contact with us, often looking down or away from us. We can help him or her to re-establish contact by saying, "I've lost you. Where have you gone?" This will usually prompt your client to make eye contact. You can then say, 'Ah. You're back again. Where did your mind just take you?'

how do you help clients who are in crisis mode contact the present moment?

Part one of a twelve-part series on ACT processes


If a client is in crisis mode, it’s very useful to use the metaphor of dropping an anchor.


For example, you could say, “I want you to notice what’s going on here. There are all these painful feelings rushing through your body; it’s like you’re caught in an emotional storm. And while you’re being swept away, it’s going to be very hard for you to take effective action. So before we focus on anything else, let’s just learn how to drop an anchor—to hold you steady until the storm passes.”


You can then take the client through a simple grounding technique, helping him or her to contact the present moment:
