how to leverage choice-awareness through process-mindfulness

To help with habit modification and problem-solving challenges, encourage your client to cultivate a baseline of choice awareness, which is a habit of noticing available options, through process-mindfulness.

  1. Invite your client to participate in an experiential exercise.
  2. Ask the client to clench and open one of his or her hands several times (e.g., "please, clench your fist, now open, now clench it again, now open it again").
  3. Help your client appreciate the mindless sameness of the moment. Explain that "when we are behaving on autopilot, we are unaware of options, we do the same thing, time and again."
  4. Ask the client to clench the fist again and, this time, invite the client to mindfully open it. Say: "Now, choose how you open your hand."
  5. Discuss the value of process-mindfulness in terms of awakening the mind to the options available in the moment.
  6. Encourage a daily process-mindfulness meditation to cultivate a baseline of choice awareness (e.g., through process-focused mindful eating).
