proposed dsm v changes

:: 0 Comments :: Article Rating :: news, new harbinger

The American Psychiatric Association (APA) announced some of their proposed changes for the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, (DSM), to be published in 2013. The DSM is the official dictionary of mental disorders recognized by the APA. Doctors use the DSM to diagnose patients, and insurance companies use it to decide on reimbursement, so it's incredibly important in the profession of psychiatry.

Some of these changes are pretty significant. They include:

  • "new categories for learning disorders and a single diagnostic category, 'autism spectrum disorders' that will incorporate the current diagnoses of autistic disorder, Asperger’s disorder…,

  • "creating a new category of 'behavioral addictions,' in which gambling will be the sole Disorder,

  • "a new category, temper dysregulation with dysphoria within the Mood Disorders section [to] better differentiate children with [severe mood dysregulation] from those with bipolar disorder or oppositional defiant disorder

  • "new recognition of binge eating disorder", and

  • elevating 'cutting' from symptom to mental disorder.

In the upcoming days, Off The Couch will have more info about this, including thoughts from our co-founder, psychologist Matthew McKay, Ph.D., as well as some of our authors. In the meantime, here are some news articles about the proposed changes:
